About the American College of Medical Physics
The American College of Medical Physics (ACMP) is the only organization in the United States devoted exclusively to the professional activities of medical physicists. It collaborates with both physician and other physics organizations in achieving this purpose. As an independent professional medical physics organization, the ACMP is able to fully represent the clinical medical physicist in complex health care issues.
The ACMP was founded with the support of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM) and was chartered in 1982.
The objectives of the ACMP are to:
- enhance the quality of the practice of medical physics,
- engage in professional activities for the benefit of the medical physics community, and
- promote the continuing competence of practitioners of medical physics.
The ACMP accomplishes these goals by:
- presentations at its annual meetings and workshops,
- participation in Medical Physics Summit meetings,
- development of professional practice standards,
- direct interaction with governmental and standards-setting organizations,
- support of state licensure efforts,
- promulgation of position papers,
- publication of a quarterly newsletter,
- online publication of the Journal of Applied Clinical Medical Physics (JACMP), and
- sponsorship of the American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP).
(The ACMP was the founding sponsor of the ABMP and now shares sponsorship with the American Academy of Health Physics.)
At present, ACMP membership includes over 400 individual and corporate members. The ACMP offers two categories of personal membership: full and provisional. Full membership is awarded to fully qualified clinical medical physicists. Provisional membership is offered to junior physicists who are actively engaged in academic or clinical training or are in the very early stages of clinical practice and pursuing board certification. Medical physicists who are interested in becoming members of the ACMP should refer to the membership application at the end of this directory. Membership in the ACMP includes a subscription to JACMP, newsletters, access to our workshops and meetings, and the opportunity to serve on various committees that have a direct impact on the current and future professional practice of medical physics.
Every clinical medical physicist is highly encouraged to invest in the future of his or her profession by becoming an active member of the American College of Medical Physics.
